JUMBO BLACK GOLD
Overview
Jumbo Black Gold is a large-format retail store located at the Black Gold Retail Park on Botevgradsko Shosse, on the northeastern periphery of Sofia, Bulgaria — the Greek toy and leisure goods retailer’s first major investment in the country.
The building covers approximately 13,000 m² of total floor area, arranged over two levels: the ground floor houses the retail sales space, while the upper level serves as a storage area for goods. The structure is part of a broader 63,000 m² retail park development on a 122,000 m² plot.
The primary structural system is a steel portal frame, with spans of up to 20 metres providing the column-free interior space essential for large-format retail. The roof structure uses cold-formed steel purlins supported on primary hot-rolled portal frames, enabling rapid erection on site. The foundation system consists of reinforced concrete footings sized for the column grid of the portal frame. The combination of long clear spans, lightweight steel construction, and straightforward foundation design allowed the structure to be erected efficiently on the flat Sofia periphery site.
ASD Sotiriou provided the full structural design for the Jumbo building, including the steel portal frame, foundation system, and roof structure.
