JUMBO PLOVDIV

Commercial, Long Spans
Overview

JUMBO Plovdiv is a large-format retail store located on the ring road of Plovdiv, Bulgaria, serving as one of the first outlets of the Greek toy and household goods retailer in the country.

The development comprises a single-storey retail hall of considerable footprint, with an integrated two-storey ancillary volume housing back-of-house and service areas. The building was completed in 2010 and is situated within the Kostievo commercial zone, Municipality of Maritza, on the western ring road of Plovdiv.

The primary structure is an all-steel portal frame system with long-span pitched roof bays spanning approximately 20 metres, supported on steel I-section columns at regular grid intervals. Secondary cold-formed steel purlins carry the profiled metal roof decking. Lateral stability is achieved through a combination of moment-frame action in the portal frames and cross-bracing in the end bays. The foundation system consists of isolated pad footings under each column base, designed for the bearing conditions of the Upper Thracian Plain. The ground floor slab is a reinforced concrete slab-on-grade. The seismic design follows Bulgarian national standards applicable at the time of construction.

ASD Sotiriou provided full structural design, geotechnical investigation, and construction supervision services for this project.
